2011 Hyundai Santa Fe

• What? Freshening of the midsize, four-door, five-passenger crossover SUV. Available with front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD).

• Why? Needed an update to stay competitive in the segment.• How much? GLS four-cylinder, FWD, manual transmission starts at $22,490 including $795 shipping. Loaded Limited V-6, AWD, automatic, about $34,000.

• How potent? 2.4-liter four-cylinder rated 175 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, 169 pounds-feet of torque at 3,750 rpm. 3.5-liter V-6 rated 276 hp at 6,300 rpm, 248 lbs.-ft. at 5,000 rpm.

2.4-liter, FWD model available with six-speed manual; all others come with six-speed automatic.

AWD normally operates as FWD, shifting power to rears as needed. Switch allows driver to lock in 50/50 power split for challenging conditions.

• How big? Slightly shorter, wider than Chevrolet Equinox. Santa Fe is 184.1 inches long, 74.4 in. wide, 67.9 in. tall on a 106.3-in. wheelbase.

Weighs 3,688 lbs. (GLS FWD, four-cylinder, manual) to 4,120 lbs. (Limited, AWD, V-6, automatic).

• How thirsty? 2.4-liter rated 19 miles per gallon in town, 26 mpg on the highway, 22 in combined driving with FWD, manual; 20/28/23 with FWD, automatic; 21/27/23 AWD, automatic.

3.5-liter rated 20/26/23 FWD automatic; 20/26/22 AWD automatic.

Trip computer in FWD four-cylinder test vehicle registered 15.6 mpg (6.41 gallons per 100 miles) in short-hop suburban driving. AWD V-6 test car registered 15 mpg (6.67 gal./100 mi.) in similar use.
